Millstone Township SD Logo

Millstone Township Superintendent Scott Feder announced today that they have hired Middle School Principal Karen Barry as the new Director of Curriculum and Instruction.

Please see the email below.

Dear Millstone Families,

I am excited to share some great news for our district.  After a rigorous search for our New Director of Curriculum and Instruction, I am happy to report that our own Karen Barry (current Principal of the Middle School) was the clear BEST CANDIDATE!!! Starting July 1st, Karen will assume this new role.  It was extremely important to her to finish this year as the Principal and see her 8th graders through their final year.

Karen comes with so much experience and most importantly she knows us, knows our strategic vision and has the skill set to lead us down a path of high level curriculum development. For those of you that know her from your time in the Middle School or your time in the K-5, you know of not only her commitment to education and kids, but also her specific commitment to our Millstone Community.

I know, many of you with kids in the Middle School now, or about to be, are probably concerned about this change, but the great news is that Karen is still right here and the person who replaces her will have immediate access to her knowledge and strengths.

With this said, we are of course now in the process of hiring a new Middle School Principal.  Replacing Mrs. Barry is not an easy task, but we are aiming high and will bring in another stellar principal! If you would like to share any thoughts on the hiring of a new principal for the Middle School, please feel free to share by either giving me a call or sending an email. I am always open to thoughts and ideas from our community! Thank you,

Scott Feder

Making their mark in New York City!

I am thrilled to be able to highlight two very talented young men who are making their mark in New York City by writing the book, the musical scores and the lyrics to  FABLE A New Musical. These men are the youngest writing team to ever be accepted by the New York Musical Theater Festival. There were chosen from a pool of more than two hundred other talented applicants from all over the world.

The co-writers of Fable are both Jersey raised and local guys and we are so proud of them!

Chris Anselmo is from Millstone Township and Harrison Kaufman is from Princeton.

Watch the video below and hear about the play in their own words.

Fable will be performed at the New York’s Pershing Square Signature Center in July as part of the 11th Annual New York Musical Festival.

Fable… A contemporary fable about becoming an adult in the 21st Century.
It’s graduation time. When a mysterious classmate crashes their last epic night of celebration, a group of childhood friends is forced to confront the secrets they’ve been keeping from each other. Will their friendships survive the night? With an imaginative score and dynamic characters, Fable captures the moments when we are forced to change whether we like it or not. Watch what happens when the stories we were told as kids are revealed for the fictions they truly are.
Chris Anselmo

Chris Anselmo

Chris Anselmo grew up in Millstone Township and attended the Millstone Schools and Allentown High School.  Chris is currently an undergraduate in the B.A. Theatre program and the Music Theatre Certificate program at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. While attending Northwestern University, Chris directs both the production and music for various student and professional productions, he writes for the annual Waa-Mu Show, and serves as Music Director of the nationally acclaimed all-male a cappella group, Freshman Fifteen. Two of Chris’s original musicals (Fable, Ecclesiazusae) received their world premieres at Northwestern University during the spring of his freshman year. Recently, he was one of 11 songwriters chosen to participate in the 2013 NYMF Musical Theatre Songwriting Workshop led by Anna K. Jacobs and Andrew Lippa. Chris has worked as a production assistant for the acclaimed Johnny Mercer Foundation Songwriters Project and as an intern for Comma Music, a company that creates original advertisement music. He is also a proud member of both ASCAP and the Dramatists Guild of America. Visit his website at www.christopheranselmo.com for more information.

Harrison Kaufman

Harrison Kaufman

Harrison Kaufman is currently an undergraduate in the B.F.A. Drama program at New York University, studying in the Playwrights Horizons Theater School. Previously, he studied Theater and Performance Studies, as well as Playwriting, at The University of Chicago.  There, he wrote and performed for Off-Off Campus, the university’s renowned sketch and improv comedy troupe, as a member of the 27th Generation.  He also wrote/devised for readings, festivals, and even a translation of a French Mozart-based musical entitled “Mozart: L’Opera Rock.”  He’s had his work produced at Atlantic Theater Company’s Acting School at NYU, UT/TAPS at University of Chicago, The Actors Training Center in Wilmette, IL, Arts Alliance at Northwestern University, The Barrow Group in NYC, and Frenchwoods Festival for the Performing Arts.  Harrison is currently devising and performing original work every week in his studio at NYU, and two of his plays premiered in April at Tisch New Theatre Festival and The Playwrights Collective Reading Series.  Harrison is a proud member of the Dramatists Guild of America. Harrison went to Princeton High School.

Chris describes the early days when he and Harrison met and began working together.

“Harrison and I met at French Woods Festival for the Performing Arts, a sleep-away summer arts camp. We were in the same bunk in 2008, and have been best friends since. Harrison and I began writing comedic songs as part of our performance shtick back at camp. A few years later, I had to complete a “senior project” during my last month of high school. I decided to write a song cycle (a collection of musical theatre songs strung together by a certain theme–this theme was growing up and moving on to college). I brought the songs to Harrison and begged him to write a musical with me–promising that it would take only a month or two tops. Two years later, here we are! For NYMF, there was a blind application process earlier this fall. Over 200 musicals submit to the literary department of NYMF and 20 are chosen as finalists. The 20 finalists are sent to Grand Jury of industry professionals (such as Michael Cerveris, Hunter Foster, and Amanda Green), who decide the 10 that will be chosen. Considering that Harrison and I are the youngest writing team to ever have our work showcased at NYMF, it is a huge honor. Many people wait their whole lives for an opportunity like this, and we couldn’t be prouder to have reached this goal at the beginning of our careers!”

Tickets go on sale June 16 here: http://nymf.org/tickets/2014-events/fable

Chris would like to take this opportunity to thank some of the people who have supported him throughout the years.

“I want to thank my parents for supporting and believing in me, my brother and sisters for letting me play music really loudly, my extended family, Ms. Lehman, Mr. Megill, Ms. Stuart, Ron Schaefer, David H. Bell, my friends here at Northwestern, Jen Wineman, Chris Mirto, Reed Ridgley, Jessie Gill, and everyone in my a cappella group, Freshman Fifteen!”

Click on the link below to hear a clip of the music https://soundcloud.com/fable-the-musical/home-enough-for-me

Chris and Harrison need to raise money for their production.

Please consider supporting the arts and all the talented people who have worked so hard on this project.

They are trying to reach a goal of $10,000 using the website Kickstarter.

“If anyone would be willing to donate to help us reach this goal, it would mean the world to us! Here is our page: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/fableanewmusical/fable-a-new-musicalChris said.

Millstone Township Foundation for Educational Excellence Awarded $48,885.60 in Grants This School Year to Millstone Township Schools

Foundation awards $26,670 for three grants this cycle for Chromebooks to enhance Writer’s Workshop,

MakerBot Replicator®2 3D printers, SketchUp® 3D modeling software and a “Dinosaurs Rock” assembly

Millstone Township, NJ, May 29, 2014 – Millstone Township Foundation for Educational Excellence (MTFEE) awarded three grants today totaling $26,670 to Millstone Township Schools. In January, MTFEE awarded five grants totaling $22,215.60. Between its two grant cycles this school year, MTFEE awarded a total of $48,885.60. Since 2002, MTFEE has awarded more than $486,670 to its schools. There are currently more than 60 MTFEE-funded grant programs running in the Millstone Township School district. Every child that matriculates through the school district will in some way benefit from an MTFEE funded grant.

This grant cycle awards included Chromebooks to enhance the Writer’s Workshop curriculum; MakerBot Replicator®2 3D printers and SketchUp® 3D modeling software to support the rapid prototyping program; and a “Dinosaurs Rock: A Journey Through Earth’s Prehistoric History” assembly.

Following is a listing of the grants and recipients:

Edward A. Bittner, Seventh Grade Language Arts Teacher and Rachael Moriarty, Seventh Grade Language Arts Teacher

Edward A. Bittner, Seventh Grade Language Arts Teacher and Rachael Moriarty, Seventh Grade Language Arts Teacher

Crafting with Chromebooks ($18,950) (Edward A. Bittner, Seventh Grade Language Arts Teacher and Rachael Moriarty, Seventh Grade Language Arts Teacher) – The grant consists of 50 Chromebooks (25 each class) that will enable all seventh grade students to have access, on a daily basis, to the Internet—where they can access up-to-date materials, interactive planning tools and Google Docs— to enhance the Writer’s Workshop curriculum. Google Docswill improve the students’ ability to draft, revise, edit, share, create and store information. With Google Docs immediate feedback in real time will be provided to students, without interrupting their writing process, for truly responsive teaching. Students will also have the opportunity to create multimedia products with the Chromebooks using apps such as Prezi and GoAnimate.

Rapid Prototyping: Bringing Our Ideas to Life! ($6,600)

Thomas Semko, Middle School Assistant Principal and Ellen Osborne, Middle School Technology Teacher

Thomas Semko, Middle School Assistant Principal and Ellen Osborne, Middle School Technology Teacher

(Thomas Semko, Middle School Assistant Principal and Ellen Osborne, Middle School Technology Teacher) – The grant consists of two MakerBot Replicator®2 3D printers and SketchUp® 3D modeling software, for Applied Technology students, to enhance STEM education and provide those students with real-world design applications. Teaching 3D modeling and providing exposure to fabrication equipment will allow technology education classes to take a crucial step towards becoming the home for student creativity and scientific exploration. 3D printing is a rapidly developing technology that allows users, with no fabrication experience, to easily produce computer-designed parts, which would be impossible to make with conventional tools. Through the use of 3D modeling software, SketchUp®, students will gain a deeper understanding of spatial relationships as they are challenged to create new products. Students will be given design challenges, which will promote the use of skills acquired throughout their academic day, in mathematics, science and even language arts.

Valerie Gunsalus, Second Grade Teacher

Valerie Gunsalus, Second Grade Teacher

Dinosaurs Rock, A Journey Through the Earth’s Prehistoric History Assembly

($1,120) (Valerie Gunsalus, Second Grade Teacher) – The grant consists of an interactive assembly to all second grade students where a “Dinosaurs Rock” instructor will bring an exhibit of museum quality pieces, including genuine fossils. During the assembly, students will engage in a hands-on fossil dig, which will enable them to increase their knowledge about dinosaur extinction theory, different types of dinosaurs, how fossils formed, as well as scientific clues. By viewing actual fossils, students will gain an understanding of the size of dinosaurs and increase their knowledge about prehistoric life. Students will also learn about how museums build exhibits of dinosaurs and their fossils.

End of the school year letter from Millstone Twp. Superintendent Scott Feder

Letter from Millstone Township Superintendent Scott Feder

Dear Millstone Families,

Today concludes the 2013-2014 school year and what a year it was. The winter was simply insane and frankly, I am surprised we are not going to be in school for the rest of the week. It sure looked like it was going that way. However, besides the long winter, this was another year where we all were able to sit back and watch our children grow and learn and just enjoy being kids. I always miss those times in the summer, when the schools are quiet and empty. Believe it or not, we all start to miss it after a while and the flip happens where the quiet gets old and the gears start as we look to welcome back the kids and teachers. (Although don’t get me wrong, a few weeks of peace and quiet in the schools is well received – LOL.)

I am a very fortunate man in that I have the honor to oversee the school district and have great opportunity to see our kids in action on a daily basis. June always gives me time to reflect and look upon what is important and this year, like so many before, gives me a sense of accomplishment in that our students continue to be exemplary children who care about one another as well as their studies. It truly is a special place.

As this year does conclude, I want to acknowledge our retirees, who have given Millstone countless years of dedicated service:

 Mr. Steven Judd – Middle School Special Education

 Dr. Sharon Izzi – Middle School Science

 Mrs. Audrey Ferraro – Middle School Language Arts

 Mrs. Judith Mazzucco – Elementary/Primary School Art Teacher

 Mrs. Christine Hayes – Bus Driver

 Mrs. Susan Cerulo – Primary School Special Education

 Mrs. Yvonne Warschawski – Primary School Special Education

 Mrs. Nina Banerjee – Primary School Grade 1 Teacher

 Mrs. Pam Nannini – Central Office Payroll

 Mrs. Libby Vona – Elementary and Primary School Spanish

 Mrs. Laura Vetere – Board Office Administration

 Mrs. Patti Buchanan – Speech Therapist

Congratulations to this long honorable list for their years of service and best wishes and enjoyment in retirement! I also want to thank our entire staff for another fantastic year. There were many changes this year in education and our teachers have hurdled each piece and always managed to keep the focus on our students. They are true champions!

It is important to recognize and give thanks to the Board of Education who spends hours upon hours dedicated to the best interests of all of the children as well as the community. They are also true champions of our district and I thank them for all they do!

My last words go to our students and families. Our district can only soar as high as it does because of you. I continue to be impressed with our kids and families and cannot thank you all enough for your support and participation in all that goes on. Congrats to all of our students and to everyone,

HAVE A WONDERFUL SUMMER!

Sincerely,

Scott Feder Superintendent of Schools

The Common Core: What it is and what it isn’t

$

At the joint Upper Freehold and Millstone Township Board of Education meeting, two administrators from each district presented, “The Common Core: What it is…What it isn’t.”

Upper Freehold Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Mark Guterl and Superintendent Dr. Richard Fitzpatrick along with Karen Barry, Millstone Township’s Director of Curriculum and Instruction and Superintendent Scott Feder provided a comprehensive overview of the Common Core Standards and how it will affect students.

“The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are rigorous, internationally informed English/ language arts (ELA) and mathematics standards that are designed to ensure that students leave school with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in college and careers. They were developed by a team of experts, educators and stakeholders in a process led by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers,” the presentation quoted from achivethecore.org.

Mr. Feder said that at this time, more than 40 states have voluntarily adopted and are working to implement the standards that are designed to ensure that students graduating from high school are prepared to take credit-bearing introductory courses in two or four-year college programs or to enter the workforce.

For many years, the administrators and boards of education for both districts have been working together to align curriculum and share professional development opportunities.

Mr. Feder stated that there will not be “massive sea changes” in our programs due to CCSS.

Mrs. Barry said that the standards have started to be implemented in our schools for the past few years, an initiative that began in earnest three years ago by former Assistant Superintendent Steve Cochrane.

Mr. Guterl stressed that the CCSS are a ‘living breathing document” that will change just as the New Jersey State Standards had done every few years. They will be revisited and reassessed.  He related the incorporation of CCSS to American football. He said that all teams have set standards that they all must follow but how they score and how they reach those standards are up to the team and the organization. The CCSS standards are set and the districts and the classroom teachers determine how to achieve the standards.

The presentation is available by clicking on the following link below.

Mr. Guterl posted on his blog the following Common Core State Standards links:

Exciting administrative changes at the Millstone Township School District

Letter from Millstone Township Superintendent Scott Feder

July 1, 2014

Dear Millstone Families,

I want to share some important information about some personnel changes that are happening in the district.  My goal was to have any changes in place so that they could be communicated to you prior to the end of the school year, but timing was not on our side.  However, I am pleased to be announcing these moves as I do believe they help support our strategic planning initiatives as well as our entire district program.

1. This first personnel change is one you already know about. Mrs. Karen Barry has been selected to be the district’s Director of Curriculum and Instruction. Mrs. Barry leaves the Middle School Principalship after a very strong and productive 5 year term. The good news is that she remains in district to support the new principal and be the beacon she has been for these last five years. She now moves into this new role where her skills and strengths can spread to all three buildings as well as liaison to Allentown High School.

2.  Dr. Christopher Huss, an experienced principal in the Warren Township Schools, will be joining our team as the new Middle School Principal.  Dr. Huss comes to us with 9 years of administrative experience, a Doctorate from Seton Hall and an extremely strong reputation amongst his peers and the staff he has led.  We welcome Dr. Huss on August 1, 2014.

3.  Last night, the Board of Education approved Mr. Thomas Semko as the new Director of STEAM & District Data.  This position is designed to specifically support the strategic planning initiatives as well as work with our new teacher evaluation system and all of the data obtained in this area.  In addition, Mr. Semko will work with the extensive data that is available to us on our student performance.  By linking this information together through a thorough and ongoing analysis, we plan to be more scientific in how we support both individual students and teachers as well as provide for the level of educational programming that best suits our students. Of course, the obvious cannot go unmentioned and that is that Mr. Semko will also be leaving the Middle School.  I know that losing the two administrators at one time can sound scary, but having them both still in district should alleviate those fears.  Mr. Semko’s replacement is announced below and I do believe this will also help to alleviate possible concerns.

4.  I will be recommending to the Board of Education that Mr. Luis Ramirez, current Elementary/Primary School Principal, shift to the Middle School as the Assistant Principal.  Mr. Ramirez has served the schools well these past two years and is eager for the next challenge in his career and I know he will be happy to be in one location.  He has earned this and we are thrilled to have him join the Middle School family where he knows the majority of the students and families from his time in the Elementary School.

5.  This leaves a vacancy for an Assistant Principal for the Elementary/Primary School which will be filled through advertisement and our hiring process.  We expect this position to be filled in time for the September school opening.

I do understand that these are all significant moves, but in each case, the district gets stronger.  We have a strong and cohesive administrative team who cares for one another and values each other’s success.  I have no doubt or question that each of our team will be there to support each and every one of these moves to better the district and ensure that each person is successful in their new role.  I am truly so fortunate to work with such an amazing team.

Dr. Wisniewski and Mrs. Bogusz will be working with their school communities to organize the hiring process for the new Assistant Principal of the Elementary School/Primary School.  I welcome your questions and am available to discuss any of these moves with you.  Feel free to reach out at your convenience. 732-786-0950 ext. 51010

Thank you and continue to enjoy this great weather and the summer months.

The Millstone Township Foundation for Educational Excellence (MTFEE) announces the kick-off of its “180 Day Club” and its officers for the 2014-15 school year. MTFEE is a non-profit organization devoted to funding grants for items that nurture extraordinary educational experiences for every student in Millstone Township Public Schools and are beyond the scope of the general school budget.

The “180 Day Club” asks for contributions of $1.00 a day for each of the 180 days of school and “extraordinary” learning. Families who contribute will have their name displayed on an acorn. The acorns will be hung on the MTFEE oak tree murals that are displayed in the lobbies of the primary, elementary and middle schools. To date, MTFEE has raised more than $35,000 through the campaign which was launched five years ago.

MTFEE also announces its officers for the 2014-15 school year, which include:

·         Nicole Pyhel – President & Information Officer (returning positions)

·         Beth Cotler – Vice President (returning position)

·         Coleen Raccuglia – Treasurer (returning position)

·         Kristin Schloss – Corresponding Secretary (new position)

MTFEE operates independently from the school district and replenishes its grant fund exclusively through private donations and its fundraising efforts. The foundation has awarded more than $486,670 in grants to Millstone Township schools since 2002. MTFEE grants, which have been awarded at every grade level and in every discipline, have included STEM enrichment programs, a book room, SMARTBoards®, mobile computer and iPad labs and a rock climbing wall.

There are currently more than 60 MTFEE-funded grant programs running. Every child that matriculates through the school district will in some way benefit from an MTFEE-funded grant. MTFEE is a member of New Jersey Education Foundation Partnership and The National Consortium of State and Local Education Foundations (NCEFS).

About MTFEE

From its initial conception in 1995 to its designation as a 501©3 charitable organization in 2002, the Millstone Township Foundation for Educational Excellence (MTFEE) has remained steadfast in its goal to fund grants for items that nurture extraordinary educational experiences for every student in Millstone Township Public Schools and are beyond the scope of the general school budget. Items include innovative classroom programs, educational opportunities for students, staff development, and state-of-the-art teaching materials. Through the creativity of the teaching staff’s grant applications and the fundraising efforts of MTFEE, the foundation is proud to have awarded more than $486,670 in grants to Millstone Township schools. MTFEE grants, which have been awarded at every grade level and in every discipline, have included STEM enrichment programs, a book room, SMARTBoards®, mobile computer and iPad labs and a rock climbing wall. MTFEE was the first organization in the district to put iPads into the classroom in the spring of 2011.
